Scott, Can you come to the Nelsonville City Council meeting this evening at 7 p.m.? One of the council members put me on the agenda, but I do not have a good background on the wellhead protection program to answer questions that will likely come up. Chad, I would have been happy to come to the council meeting but I was not in the office yesterday to get your e-mail. If there is another meeting you would like me to attend I usually need at least a week prior notice to see if my schedule is open. Let me know if you would like me to be at another council meeting. Scott, The Nelsonville City Council has me down for April 27 to speak at 7. Could you make it there to help answer questions? I would be happy to attend and offer any information I can. If you see no reason to otherwise meet before the meeting, I will see you at 7. Where are the meetings held? I plan to present for about 5 minutes. I will emphasize the EPA findings that our water supply is very vulnerable, as well as my personal concerns from drinking the water for many years. I am sure they will have questions, and that is where you can come in to help answer technical questions (I am sure the cost to achieve a wellhead protection plan will be asked). I hope you could also talk about the need for such a plan in order to safeguard the health and safety of the community, particularly in light of the EPA findings of the particular vulnerability of our water supply. This is from the Nelsonville City website: The Nelsonville Public Water Supply obtains its source water from three wells that are located on the northern side of the water treatment plant near the Hocking River. These wells draw water from the Hocking River Aquifer. The approximate average daily production for this reporting period was 673,000 gallons per day. The design flow of the plant is 1,080,000 gallons per day which places production at 62.3% of the water plants maximum capacity. This is 4 % lower than the 2005 reporting period and unchanged from the 2006 reporting period. This water system serves approximately 9,850 residents in Nelsonville and the Village of Buchtel. Ohio EPA completed a study of Nelsonville’s source water supply of well water to identify potential contaminant sources and provide guidance on how to protect the drinking water source. According to this study, the aquifer (water rich zone) that supplies water to the Nelsonville water system has a high susceptibility to contamination. This determination is based on the following: 䀂? the lack of a protective layer of clay or shale overlying the aquifer, 䀂? a shallow depth (less than 10 feet below ground surface) of the aquifer, 䀂? the presence of significant potential contaminant sources in the protection area, 䀂? the presence of manmade contaminants in treated water. This susceptibility rating means that under currently existing conditions, the likelihood that the aquifer may become contaminated is relatively high. This likelihood can be minimized by implementing appropriate protective measures such as the recycling of used oil and proper disposal of pesticides, herbicides, paints, and other hazardous materials. Reporting of hazardous material spills should be made to your water department or Ohio EPA. More information about the source water assessment or what consumers can do to help protect the aquifer is available by calling 753-1314. - Show quoted text - -- - Show quoted text - Reply Forward Reply Chad Kister to Scott show details 4/27/09 Scott, Another question I and council members have asked is the availability of grants to pay all or part of a wellhead protection plan. Chad - Show quoted text - -- - Show quoted text - Reply Forward Reply Chad Kister to CityManager show details 5/28/09 Mr Scherer, I look forward to our meeting tomorrow. Attached are EPA documents about the Drinking water protection plan. I think this can be done with major overall cost savings by improving the quality of the water quality that we all drink. The first step is passing a resolution through council.
