Curbside Recycling in the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District

Curbside Recycling in the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District offers many local benefits.

- For $2.00 per month the District offers weekly pickup of up to 80% of your household waste if it is clean and source separated.

- In communities where it is available households subscribing to curbside recycling in the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District are eligible for reduced cost trash collection service.

- Materials collected and processed are sold to industry as material feedstock for new products
 -conserving resources and protecting the environment
 -reducing waste going into the environment and thereby protecting public health
 -reducing waste of material thereby conserving resources and reducing costs to industry
 -conserving raw materials helping to guarantee long term economic stability
 -saving money from reduced disposal costs and earning money from sale of materials
 -reducing waste and being ethically responsible and and intellectually astute
 -preserving habitat, protecting scenic landscapes, and respecting America's heritage

- Materials collected by the Athens-Hocking Recycling Program in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 have saved more than a half million dollars in disposal costs at the landfill and were sold to industry bringing more than one million dollars cash into the two county district.
Industry paid $1,000,000 for material we would normally pay $500,000 to bury in a landfill.

- 26 full-time jobs have been created by thousands of people in Athens and Hocking Counties who sort their reflise for recycling. Only a small percentage of the waste stream is currently being recycled. More people recycling can create many more jobs.

 - The Athens-Hocking Recycling Program generates more than a million dollars of economic activity annually in Athens and Hocking Counties.

- The Athens and Hocking County recycling operations are worth over 2 million dollars.

- Wages and daily operations costs are paid for through local recycling collection service fees and from the revenues generated by the sale of recyclable materials The Athens-Hocking Recycling Program is one of the few, if not only, free standing recycling operation in Ohio. The daily operations are run without tax dollars or government grants. The program is financed right out of the trash can.

- Although recycling costs money and cannot pay for itself, the sale of recyclable materials offsets the cost of operating expenses by 50%-60% depending on the status of markets.
 Recycling reduces the overall cost of waste management services.

- Curbside Recycling service is currently making service available to more than 10, 500 households in Athens and Hocking Counties.

- In 1989 the average household in the city of Athens paid $9.50 per month for weekly trash collection service. In 1999 the average household in the city of Athens pays $7.50 per month for weekly trash collection and weekly curbside recycling services. In ten years, residents of the city of Athens have saved more than $850,000 in trash collection service while helping protect the environment and public health and conserving resources for their children and improving long term economic stability.

- Every day that employees of the Athens-Hocking Recycling Program go to work they are providing more service at less cost directly to local residents and taxpayers.

- The Athens and Hocking County Recycling Centers are collecting, processing, and selling more than 9 million pounds of materials per year.

- Recycling is the easiest, most effective, and most accessible way that the average individual,
 adult or child, can help protect the environment and public health while helping to improve the economy.

- The Athens-Hocking Recycling Program offers the average citizen a direct opportunity to help create jobs for area residents. The more waste diverted from landfills and into recycling programs the more jobs will be created to collect, process and ship materials to industry.

- The more recycling that occurs in Athens and Hocking Counties, the more viable these counties are for the establishment of a manufacturing facility that makes new products out of used materials. More recycling requires the development of more markets.

- Recycling offers adults and public officials an opportunity to pass on a legacy of wise resource management to their children and future generations instead of the unprecedented amounts of waste and degraded materials that are being generated daily at a growing rate.

- Curbside recycling is currently available to residents of Athens (and several nearby neighborhoods), The Plains, Nelsonville, Amesville, Albany, and Logan.

All materials collected on the curbside recycling program or dropped off at the recycling centers must be clean and source separated. The Athens-Hocking Recycling Program reserves the right to refuse unsorted, unclean, and improperly prepared materials.

 Materials Accepted
The following materials are accepted by Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers. Materials must be clean and sorted by type. The Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers reserve the right to refuse any materials that cannot be recycled or which are improperly prepared for processing. Although not required, it is preferred that materials be put at curbside or be delivered to the center in paper grocery bags.

 Newspaper - Stacked neatly in grocery sacks. No other paper included.

 White Office Paper - Letterhead, copy paper, other white office paper. No paper clips or staples. Place in grocery sacks.

Mixed Paper - Most other non-glossy colored paper. Place in grocery sacks.

 Computer Paper - Green bar computer print-out only. Place in grocery sacks.

Magazines and Catalogs - Place in grocery sacks.

IBM Cards & File Folders - Place in grocery sacks.

 Paperboard - Cereal boxes, cracker boxes, pop & beer cartons, etc. Remove plastic inserts. Flatten and place in grocery sacks or large paperboard box.

Corrugated Cardboard - Brown corrugated and paper grocery bags only. Must be flattened.

 Beverage Cans - Beer and soft drink cans, aluminum and steel. Rinse and place in grocery sacks.

Aluminum cat food cans - Rinse and place in grocery sacks.

 Scrap Aluminum - Aluminum foil, pie pans, and other scrap. Material must be free of food. Place in grocery sacks.

Tin/Steel Food Cans - Rinse and place in grocery sacks. Labels need not be removed.

 Glass - Rinse, remove caps and separate by color (clear, brown, green/blue). Place in grocery sacks. Labels need not be removed.

 Plastic - Some number I & 2 plastics onl%?. Milk jugs, pop bottles, sharnpoo & detergent bottles. Remove caps and rinse. Jugs may be stepped on to save space and place in grocery sacks. No wide mouth containers (i.e.: butter tubs, cottage cheese, yogurt containers).
