Judge to Decide Mining Future in Dysart Woods

BELMONT COUNTY, OH. (2004-10-13) The coordinator of a group trying to protect Dysart Woods says this Friday is, quote, "the ultimate day of reckoning" for the Belmont County forest.

That's when a judge is supposed to hear arguments on whether a company should stop mining temporarily while a court case continues on a permanent halt.

Chad Kister of Dysart Defenders says the mining is about to do serious harm to the forest.

He says past mining has impacted parts of the watershed, but future mining would be around and under old growth forests where it could do even greater damage.

Kister says that's why it's so important that Dysart Defenders wins Friday's hearing.

The mining company has denied any serious environmental damage is being done.
